The Manchester Phoenix, through the Foundation, will also be sending out a strong message over the next twelve months. "Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life" is a youth drug education and drug prevention campaign. The programme educates children as young as six on the dangers of drugs, and challenges them to remain drug-free. As well as introducing this message to our road show programme, the Foundation will aim to hold small seminars, which will be open to everyone. All this will be done with one specific aim in mind, helping children "Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life".
The Foundation will be looking for commercial partners and local organisations that will help provide support to run the "Say No to Drugs" seminars and road shows so we may visit children from schools in deprived areas of Manchester and invite them and their teachers to watch the Phoenix play live. To help promote this message we are looking in to several extra ideas, such as at each chosen game the children will be given a "Say No to Drugs" t-shirt from the directors and staff of the partner, which will have the name and logo of the company or organisation upon it. We will also look to provide all the schools that participate with a large array of posters and booklets, which will explain the truth about drugs.
We will be asking each child to sign a pledge for the foundation:
As a Drug Free Child, I pledge to lead the way by:
- 1. Living a drug-free life
- 2. Showing my friends that a drug free life is more fun
- 3. Helping my fellow Drug Free Kids
- 4. Learning more about how drugs really harm people
- 5. Telling people the truth about the harmful effects of drugs
- 6. Helping my family and friends to be drug-free
- 7. Setting a good example to all children, by leading the way to a drug-free UK
In return each child that signs the pledge will get a family ticket to come and watch the drug-free Phoenix in action. The Foundation is also going to ask all of its partners to sign a pledge as well:
“We, the undersigned, hereby recognise our concern over the growing drug problem amongst the youth of the North West of England and pledge our support to the "Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life" programme and agree to speak out publicly whenever possible to encourage young people to "Say No to Drugs". Further, we ask the elected leaders of this county and others in positions of influence to join with us in support of this ideal by encouraging young people everywhere to lead drug-free lives.”
We are hoping to be able to put 1500 children and their families through this element of the foundation’s activities in the next twelve months.
